About Us

Four Generations of the Mathias family have been directly involved in the cultivation and processing of coffee and tea. Kelagur Estate was acquired by S L Mathias (1868-1940), himself the son of a coffee planter, in 1927. His son E J Mathias (1913-1992) carried on the family tradition for five decades and developed the estate further, planting coffee, clonal tea and progressively improving the social welfare of the workers.

In 1980, Peter Mathias joined the organization and in 1989 assumed the role of Managing Partner. In the last 25 + years, Peter and his loyal and hard working Team have transformed Kelagur Estate into one of India’s premier Tea and Coffee plantations. Currently, Kelagur Mathias Coffee and Tea Plantations is spread over a thousand acres and the output is in excess of 7,50,000 Kgs of premium quality finished produce annually. As the major employer of over 400+ employees, their credo has always been people first!

The United Planters Association of Southern India (UPASI) – a 120 year old organization formed by the three Southern states of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu elected Peter Mathias as President of UPASI for the year 2013-14.

Coffee Board has been reconstituted by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, Government of India for a period of 3 years from Jan 2014 to Jan 2017, Peter Mathias has been nominated as a Member of the Coffee Board in the category “Eminent Personality in the field of Research/ Marketing/ Management / Promotion of Coffee

We provide our employees and their families with on site housing, a hospital with a qualified doctor, crèches for the very young, two junior schools with qualified teachers and of course a work place environment that brings out the best in each and every individual at every level. In return, our employees have responded with a level of motivation, dedication, loyalty and a passion for excellence that is second to none in the industry. This in turn, has resulted in our people taking ownership, personal responsibility and self accountability for the quality of the products they proudly produce.

The Kelagur Mathias Credo: People First!

As the images show, the priority at the Kelagur Mathias Plantations is first and foremost a life long investment in people. We are a family community and we have a model plantation that is not only a workplace but a home to all employees.

To this end there are: Homes with running water, a hospital with a qualified doctor, a primary school with trained teachers, 3 crèches for the very young, a number of recreation facilities, a place of worship to all religious people.

The employees are given a generous financial package that includes a bonus, gratuity, health insurance, educational loans, loans for emergency situations, scholarships for young adults who would like to pursue further education, and a provident fund plan in which savings are matched up to 12% of their salary.

The Education Trust for our employees is the envy of the industry. The Kelagur Mathias Education Trust has enabled employees’ children to become lawyers, doctors, national athletes, accountants and even judges!

We are the major employer in this relatively remote rural Malnad region of India, giving hope and opportunities to thousands of people who would have otherwise have severely limited employment opportunities.
